Filing a tax return should be easy and quick. It hasn’t been before, but TaxScouts is here to change that for millions of people.

Let our accredited accountants sort and file your tax return, stress-free.

Let’s get into how you file a Self Assessment tax return with TaxScouts:

Do I need to file a Self Assessment tax return?

Anyone who makes untaxed money over £1,000 needs to file a tax return. HMRC need a record of all the money you earned to estimate your tax bill accurately.

The most common types of people who file a Self Assessment tax return are:

Self-employedCIS (construction workers)
First-time filersHigh earners
Investors (crypto, stocks, property)Landlords
ExpatsCouriers, riders, or drivers
Freelancers & contractorsTax relief/refund claims

If you’re a PAYE employee, you’ll receive a payslip every month and pay your taxes automatically through your salary to HMRC.

Note: You can be employed and self-employed at the same time. This means HMRC will only have one part of your salary on record so it’s your responsibility to inform them of the other (and pay your taxes correctly).

If you’re newly self-employed, have a new side hustle, have started renting out a room, or have earned any other untaxed income, you’ll need to let HMRC know.

Here are some situations that indicate you might need to file a tax return:

  • You have untaxed income
  • You want to claim a tax refund
  • HMRC tells you to submit one
  • You qualify for benefits

And more. Get all the details here and avoid HMRC’s fines and penalty fees.

How do I register for Self Assessment?

There are a few ways to register for Self Assessment, depending on your situation.

Self-employed

If you’re self-employed and haven’t filed a tax return before, you’ll need to register for Self Assessment through your HMRC business tax account.

  1. Login using your Government Gateway ID
  2. Follow the steps to register for Self Assessment
  3. Wait for your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number

UTRs are always sent to you by post and usually take about 10 business days to arrive. Once you have it,  let your TaxScouts accountant know what it is. And keep it safe!

If you’ve registered before and filed online

If you’ve filed a tax return before that means you’ve already registered for Self Assessment before.

You’ll need to re-register by filling in the CWF1 form, which you can find online in your business tax account, if you need to file a tax return again.

If you’re someone who has registered before but didn’t file online, you’ll need to create a business tax account on HMRC’s website.

If you can’t register online

You can always register by post! Fill in this form, print it out and send it off to HMRC.

Fill in an SA1 form to register

You’ll need to fill in an SA1 form if you have:

  • Become a company director
  • Capital gains tax to pay
  • Taxable foreign income of more than £300/year
  • A yearly income of over £100,000
  • Received income from UK land or property
  • Any uncollected Income Tax

You can fill it out online or send it in by post.

How long does the Self Assessment registration process take?

The whole registration process can take about 4 weeks, so don’t delay it.

Once you’re registered, you’ll receive your UTR number which you’ll need to file. Hand everything over to your TaxScouts accredited accountant and let them sort the rest.

When should I file my UK tax return?

There are a few deadlines you should be aware of including:

  • 5th October – registering for Self Assessment
  • 31st October – filing a paper tax return
  • 31st January – filing your tax return online and paying your tax bill

The new tax year starts on 6th April which is when you can file your tax return for the year before.

Register and file as soon as you can to avoid last-minute stress.

How does TaxScouts work?

We’re here to change the way millions of people file their personal taxes.

We’ll sort your taxes so you don’t have to bother with the stress. We automate the process so our accountants can focus less on the admin – the boring, long-winded stuff – and more on you and your taxes.

Plus, you get it all for an affordable, fixed, one-off fee!

Step 1: Choosing the right service

Choosing what TaxScouts service is right for you is an important step. You need to file a tax return, but could you also benefit from getting professional tax advice before filing?

If your answer is “yes” or even “maybe”, then read on. You can bundle both our tax return and tax advice service and save £59! It could be just what you’re looking for.

Traditional accountants are often extremely pricey and difficultly inflexible. So we decided to create an alternative which focuses on you rather than anything else.

Here’s what you get when you bundle the services:

  • 30 min 1-1 tax advice consultation with your accountant by phone or video
  • A written summary of your consultation stored online
  • Your Self Assessment tax return prepped and filed
  • A quick and easy crypto tax report for your transactions
  • Guidance to claim eligible expenses and tax reliefs on your tax return
