How do I find my Government Gateway User ID?
If you forgot your User ID
There are a couple of things you can do to if you don’t remember your Government Gateway user ID:
- You can call HMRC on 0300 2003600
- Or, you can search your email inbox for an older email from HMRC that looks like this:
From: Government Gateway service
Subject: Government Gateway User ID

If you just forgot your password
You can reset your password on this HMRC page.
You will need:
- your Government Gateway User ID (if you know it, of course)
- your email address (the same one you used to create the account in the first place).
If you want to create a new User ID
For steps on how to create a new Government Gateway account, please check Step 4 on this page that explains how to set up your Personal Tax Account.
Why you might want to use another login entirely
The Government Gateway ID has officially shut down on March 2019.
While you can still create a new account or recover your old one, we don’t know how long this will be possible.
We recommend you sign up for one of these services instead – and as soon as possible:
