Setting up a limited company is exciting! But the paperwork? Not so much. To request Companies House authentication code might seem like just another task to add to the list, but it’s quite straightforward to get your hands on one.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to get your authentication code and explain why you’ll need it.
A Companies House authentication code is made up of 6 digits, and it’s key when it comes to updating your business activity online.
It’s your digital equivalent to a company’s officer’s signature. But why do you need one? Well, it allows you to easily manage and update information about your company.
Without it, you won’t be able to:
So, now that we can agree it’s important, let’s find out how you can request one from Companies House.

Your future self will thank you!
If you’ve forgotten your code or need a reminder, here’s how you can get one:
Head to the Companies House website and sign in via their WebFiling service. If you don’t have an account already, you can create one here.
Once you’re logged in, find the section for managing your authentication code. This will be under your account settings or company security.
Follow the on-screen prompts to request a new authentication code. You’ll need to fill out a form, but this should take no time at all.
Companies House will send your code to your registered address or email. It should arrive within a few days. If you already have one, they’ll send you a reminder.
Your code can take up to 5 working days to arrive. If you still haven’t received it after this time, check that your physical address and email address are correct. If they are, get in touch with Companies House.
Once you have your code, you can use it to access your company’s online account and make updates. So, make sure you keep a record of it somewhere safe and don’t share it with anyone who isn’t authorised.
You’ll need to share your code with your accountant so that they can file updates for you – like your annual company tax return.
You can also use it with third-party accounting software, but you’ll need to set up an online filing account first.
Of course! If you’re looking for an accredited accountant to help you manage online activity for your business, you’re in the right place. Quick, easy and all for a one-off, fixed price. Get started here.
