HMRC CIS login

  • 2 min read

An HMRC CIS login gives you access to your Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) account. If you’re a contractor or subcontractor in the construction industry, you’ll need it to manage your tax deductions and payments. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to do before logging in and how to get started.

1. Register for the Construction Industry Scheme

Before you can use your HMRC CIS login, you must register for the CIS scheme. This allows contractors to deduct an amount from subcontractors to cover your tax obligations. These deductions are sent straight to HMRC and count towards your annual tax bill.

What You’ll Need to Register:

  • Legal business name
  • Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) Number
  • VAT Number (if your business is VAT registered)
  • The date you started trading

Once registered, you’ll be able to use your HMRC CIS login to easily track tax payments and other details.

2. Understand the CIS system

When a subcontractor works for a contractor, the contractor deducts tax from their earnings and sends it to HMRC. Here’s an example:

  • Jane Smith works as a subcontractor for London Glazing Co., earning £1,500 each month.
  • London Glazing Co. deducts 20% (or £300) and sends it to HMRC.
  • Jane receives £1,200 as payment for her work.
  • Jane is sent a payslip or statement showing the tax deduction.

If, at the end of the tax year, Jane’s paid more tax than necessary, she may be eligible for a CIS rebate.

3. Know where to find the HMRC CIS login page

To find your HMRC CIS login page, simply head over to the HMRC online service here. Once logged in, you can view your deductions, tax records, and more.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to access your HMRC CIS account and stay on top of your tax obligations. Whether you’re registering for the first time or simply logging in to check your records, having the right information at hand will make the process smooth and hassle-free.
