What information do I need to file my tax return?

The information you need to complete your tax return depends entirely on your personal tax situation and why you need to complete a tax return.

1. Construction Industry Scheme

  • CIS statements or payslips any documents evidencing how much has been earned and how much tax has been paid).
  • Any receipts for expenses related to work, such as transportation costs, equipment costs.
  • Further details of CIS expenses can be found here
  • Bare in mind that your employer is legally required to provide your payslips showing how much tax you have paid.

2. Self-employed

  • Income records can either be in the form of invoices which have been sent or a summary of the transactions recorded in a spreadsheet.
  • Any expenses directly related to the work undertaken may be deductible. An excel spreadsheet with receipts from any business related expenses can be uploaded directly to our system.
  • Alternatively, bank statements can also be used providing the direct business expenses have been highlighted.
  • If during the tax year you were employed and self-employed a P60 will be required for the portion of the year where you were employed and details of your employment should be included in your tax return.

3. Property income

  • A summary of any rental income and expenses recorded in a spreadsheet can be uploaded directly to our system.
  • Receipts from any expenditure related directly to the property rental. This includes rent, gas and electricity bills and mortgage interest - not mortgage repayments we have further information on this area in our handy guide here

4. Capital gains & charitable donations

  • The date and cost the asset was acquired, and the date and amount the asset was subsequently sold for.

  • The amount, date, and charity of donation either in document form or a spreadsheet (receipts should be kept for your tax records)

5. Employed

  • P60 End of Year Tax Certificate or P45 details of employee leaving
  • P11D Expenses and Benefits (only required if you have private health insurance)
