The Society of Authors

The Society of Authors is a trade union for writers, illustrators and literary translators. They established in 1884.

The union advises, protects and lobbies for the interests of the profession. In addition to this, they hold events and seminars covering topics such as tax returns for those in the industry – and they help members in two principal ways:

  1. Individual advice
  2. Collective action

A council of 60 eminent writers run the council and are responsible for electing the president. A Management Committee directs it and a staff runs the day-to-day operations.
